Shingling is very tedious work....glue a row on, tape it down to dry flat, wait for it to dry, take the tape off, reglue the couple that popped off, tape them down, wait for them to dry, take the tape off, sand the row, stain the row, wait for it to dry...then start the next row.
I'm using shingles left over from the Fairfield...I didn't use them on the roof because I couldn't wrap my brain around the process. In hindsight, it's a good thing I didn't use them on my first house, I may not have built a second...or a third, or a fourth....
While I was waiting for shingles to dry I stained and assembled the fence panels and the screen door, sanded and prepped the doorway to fit the door, and started cutting wood for the floor.
This is a laborious process, but the final result will bring reward. :D

I'm curious to know what kind of glue you're using. I shingled the roof of my house and I used Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue and I never had to put on tape to wait for the shingles to dry. I just put the glue on the shingle, positioned it on the roof and it just stayed there. I now use Aleene's Fast Grab for almost everything. And it does grab fast. I don't like her quick dry one. It dries too quickly not allowing enough time to position the pieces. I had started doing a brick floor with it using bricks cut from egg carton and I just hated it. I will sometimes use just her original tacky glue. That's the one I used for the egg carton bricks. But for something like siding and shingle, I recommend her fast grab glue.

I forgot to ask you why you don't just stain your shingles before gluing them? It's so much simpler. I painted all the shingles before gluing them. I just lay them out on strips of masking tape and paint them. It's a very fast process this way. They dried quickly and I applied a second coat and they were done. I never did any sanding either. I can't understand why you need to sand them before staining them.

You know what's good for relieving tedium?
Cat pictures.

I love you, Susan.
Lucille...these are half scale shingles, so they're very thin....I use Elmer's glue for almost everything...because I hadn't thought of fast grab...it's just a light, quick sanding to remove any gluey fingerprints and wood fuzz...because laying them out twice sounds like more work.
April...I bought a new tile, these stones are harder and less porous...and darker...still not as dark as I wanted, but workable.

I use Quick Grip for singles...it stinks, is messy and you have to tape a little, but it grabs fast and you can just keep going. :]
I love the visual textures you've paired.
